Workshop (hybrid) –  registration is mandatory.

Where: Saga  – Hagatorg, 107 Reykjavík

When: 11 June 2025 12:00 – 16:00

The workshop is dealing with the question of how effective learning environments should be designed in out-of-school settings. One aspect that has to be taken into account in this respect is how the learning atmosphere should be constructed to foster learning processes in general. In this workshop we will discuss three general pedagocial/psychological theories of effective learning which are useful to create a positive learning atmosphere: the theory of effective teaching (based on the work of Ekhard Klieme), the theory of acknowledgement (based on the work of Hans Rudi Leu), and the motivation theory (base on the work of Deci & Ryan). In the first (theoretical) part of the workshop the three theories will be presented, in the second (practical) part we will discuss and develop ideas how these three theories can be applied to designing effective learning contexts. The participants will learn – for example – how to start a workshop effectively, how to close it, or which tools they can use to create a positive working and learning atmosphere.

The workshop will be held in hybrid format.

Consumption Craze and Outdoor Education

On-site workshop – registration is mandatory.

Where:  Gufunes.

When: 11 June 2025 12:00 – 16:00

This Pre-Conference Workshop is two-part. On one hand, we will discuss the focus of outdoor education in Iceland and the value of collaboration between universities and institutions working in the field of outdoor education. On the other hand, we invite participants to take part in a multi-sensory journey as they engage in an outdoor smart game and are introduced to a diverse and powerful form of learning through play.

The Consumption Craze (ice. Neysluveislan) is a prominent example of how we can create impactful experiential learning opportunities for children and youth in the outdoors. This environmental scavenger hunt was designed to engage youth’s senses using multi-sensory hands-on tasks and the outdoors as its main tool.

Through experiential learning, participants engage in activities related to the consumer society of today, aiming to increase their awareness of the interplay between their own consumption and environmental issues.By combining technology, teamwork, fresh air, play, and various hands-on activities that involve looking, touching, feeling, and hearing, we aim to promote a profound understanding and engaged mindset.

At the end of the session, we will facilitate a discussion about the role of outdoor education in contemporary education and ways to connect technology and outdoor education.

This workshop is a collaboration between the School of Education and the Centre for Outdoor Education at the Reykjavík City of Outdoor Education.
